"The puppet or doll figures (Effigies) were influenced by the idea of “homunculi.” They also reflect the idea of a narrative on the surface of the body that tells the life of the individual, much like scars or tattoos. Water Baby reflects the fact that negative impacts to the environment are also a negative impact within out bodies. Host figures found in Africa and Pre-Columbian Meso America are human forms with sacred or magical objects in the body cavity that reflect the idea that the body cavity is the center of the life force. Guardian Figure was influenced by these magical host figures. Good Twin, Evil Twin expresses the classic struggle between the opposing forces of good and evil, both universally and on an individual level. Just as human skin begins to reveal the spiritual and physical history of an individual, the sculpture's tattoos reflect a universal narrative of duality. This piece also addresses the enormous contention in contemporary society about whose ideologies are good and whose are evil." ~ Maryann Webster

Zoophyte is the first vinyl 45 turns of Ödland. It celebrates the two years of existence of the group, on December 13, 2010, magic day of the Holy Lucie. Animal kingdoms and plant are studied in this disc, are confronted, exposed their respective strategies to preserve the life vis-a-vis chaos. On the first face, Cecidomyiidae is a species of scabious flies which reproduce at a tremendous speed, formant of fantastic families of famished females of sheets. Over the second face, one learns that the Flowering of the bamboos takes place only once per century at certain species to protect itself from the predatory ones, by submerging them under too full with food. At the XIXe century, one called Zoophyte the living beings which one could not distinguish if they were Animal or Vegetable. This disc of Ödland is located on this border, where mix the rites, the fight for survival and sexuality under the eye of Darwin. A vinyl invaluable, cordial, where Activité and Passivity are measured. Each of the 200 specimens is numbered and signed by the group.

"Swan Bones Theater is the title I gave to the fragile shadowland where I can play freely with different characters and scenarios, seeing what strangeness occurs between the two. I live in Kansas City, Missouri with my beau and two wonderful, shaggy muses: a dog, Wynsome, and a cat, Hildegarde. I have a small forest in my yard with a secret garden, and windows that look onto my overgrown cottage garden and potager garden; I will spend hours staring into these for inspiration. St Apollonia, Pray for Me...

As a result of teeth nightmares, I've developed a bit of a fetish. Saint Apollonia ~ The Patron Saint of Dentistry, according to legend, her torture included having all of her teeth violently pulled out or shattered. For this reason, she is popularly regarded as the patroness of dentistry and those suffering from toothache or other dental problems. She is represented in art with a dental pliers in which a tooth is held. "Illustrious virgin martyr, Apollonia, Pray to the Lord for us, lest for our offenses and sins we be punished by diseases of the teeth."

Full Crow Moon...

Happy Full Moon! March's Crow Moon heralds the end of winter...yay! I'm looking forward to a busy Spring and Summer! I've been invited to participate in an all female group art exhibition in June, so I've started working on some new pieces. I want to cover some old bottles and stones with leather so I started doing a little research on leather sculpting. At one point I googled "leather covered objects" and my eyes nearly popped out of my head when I stumbled across designer Natalia Brilli. Her line of leather covered sculptural objects, handbags, jewelry and accessories can be found at gravitypope. Here are a couple of my favorites from her collection!

Respect the Elders

The rocks were here before people were here. Lakota traditions say that life began with the rise of a great stone from the waters of creation. The Lakota word "tunkaschila" meaning “grandfather” is sometimes used for the word "stone" because stones are referred to as our elders.
