(edited from SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2009)
You might be wondering what all the fire and smoke is about around here. I have been dancing on coals for a very long time now...and it's almost over. I've survived "The Burning Times" the tests and the trials one faces during the alchemical stage, Nigredo. I've explored the depths of the Underworld. I've conquered demons...reconciled with my Shadow. I've reached the final frontier...re-shaping family karma. More about that later...
There's a point in life when you have to face the inner horror of yourself. For me, it began in Jr. High School (I went to a Catholic s elementary school grades 1-5) Even though I was one of the popular kids, (Class President even) I found myself becoming increasingly uphappy. The kind of unhappiness where I couldn't fake it anymore. Of course there was a lifetime of events leading to this crisis...but it was then I decided it was time for a revolution. School sucked and my dysfunctional home sucked even more. It was a pivotal, life changing moment. After learning about the Witch Inquisitions of Europe in my World History class, I took up an interest in Modern Witchcraft. I discovered New Wave Punk on the local college radio station. The guy who hosted the show played bands like The Cure, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Depeche Mode, P.I.L., New Order, OMD, The Smiths and the Cocteau Twins. I started tagging along with the local skater boys. They introduced me to Hardcore Punk bands like Minor Threat, the The Dead Kennedys, Black Flag. I abandoned the latest fashion trends for a black wardrobe...left behind my white Keds and pretty flats for a pair of black Vision Street Wear skate shoes and a pair of chunky Mary Janes with big silver buckles. I walked away from all the beautiful plastic people and found a new BFF (Emily Schumacher) and kissed my popularity status goodbye! By my first year of High School Emily and I set off into the Unknown to look for signs of LIFE. We were the "Squid Sisters"... it was originally an insult about our newly adopted, inky black wardrobe and make-up that one of our peers called us...but we embraced it! It wasn't long before we found our new family of freaks: new wavers, punks and death rockers (the term "goth" didn't really exsist yet). Emily and I grew apart very quickly. She got a boyfriend and I got a new BFF. I headed down a much darker path, that's when the story really begins. Here's a picture of me just days after my 14th Birthday, just the beginning of my descent into Darkness...
"I called out to God to liberate my soul, but the Lord replied "If you want the key to Heaven child, first you must walk below...down below" So with lips painted like poison and in black I was clothed, so began the long journey home. I looked in dark places for the other half my soul. Loomed in dark spaces and my hands were always cold..." Lavona King 1991
I started haunting "The Occult Bookstore" where I got my first deck of Tarot Cards "the Mythic Tarot". I bought my first Occult books there like: A Witches' Bible by Jane and and Stewart Farrar, The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey, and novels like The Necronomicon by H.P. Lovecraft, and Moonchild by Aleister Crowley. I discovered Wax Trax Records and my taste in music got darker and harder. Some of my favorites were: My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult, Joy Division, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Dead Can Dance, Fields of the Nephilim, Ministry, RevCo, Christian Death, The Cramps, The Misfits, Danzig, 45 Grave, Alien Sex Fiend, Einstürzende Neubauten, Nitzer Ebb, Nick Cave, Miranda Sex Garden, Rosetta Stone, The Swans, Death in June, and Current 93. I idolized women like Siouxsie Sioux, Diamanda Galas, Exene Cervenka and Lydia Lunch! (That's Lydia below)
My weekends were spent going to see bands and hanging out at Chicago's legendary all ages night club, Medusa's. By the age of 16 I had a fake I.D. and started hanging out at 21 & over Goth & Industrial nightclubs like Neo, Hounds Tooth, Crobar, and Aftermath. I would take a shower and say goodnight to my parents at about 10pm...wait till I heard them go to bed...get dressed and sneak out my bedroom window! My home life was an intolerable madhouse so I left home the day before my 18th Birthday. That's when things got totally out of control. Looking back it all seems like a bizarre dream...
I've started a project to archive my own alchemical "Nigredo" stage. A journey through my personal Underworld...Death Rock Culture and Dark Spirituality (Black Magic, Necromancy, Demonology). I got this old Victorian style secretary on craigslist for $50 that will contain the art and objects used to illustrate what I've endured through "The Burning Times". It's already painted with a thick coat of black paint, but I'm going to burn it with a torch and then put a coat of epoxy on it. (see the Maarten Baas 'Smoke Collection' a few posts ago) I'm also considering using this crackle paint I saw at the art supply store that gives it that kind of burnt look...so we'll see...I don't want to set my back porch on fire! You might call it a Cabinet of Morbid Curiosity...a cabinet (instead of a closet) for my skeletons! The cabinet will contain a diary of core issues that caused my descent into Darkness. Shadow Totems that I met along the way: Spiders, Bats, Black Cats, Snakes. Dark Lords of the Underworld will be represented, like Satan, Lucifer, Baphomet, Hades, the Baron Samedi. I also want to feature the links between my own behavior and the psychological aspects of the Dark Feminine Goddess (Dark Side of the Moon) Medusa, Hecate, Lilith, Babalon and Kali.
Every culture and religion has a myth or a fable about the Descent of Spirit into Darkness...the heroic act of leaving everything you love behind to journey into the Underworld. Those who return from the land of the Dead emerge triumphantly from the depths wearing a hard earned Crown of Wisdom. My favorite is the story of the Persephone, the Goddess of Spring...below she is pictured just before her descent...she has left behind her friends and family, her worldly possessions including her velvet robes and jeweled crown. My story is like a modern re-telling of the Perpsephone Myth...

Remembering Salem
In colonial Massachusetts, between February 1692 and May 1693, over 150 people were arrested and imprisoned based on accusations of Heresy and Witchcraft. The two courts convicted twenty-nine people of the capital felony of witchcraft. Nineteen of the accused, fourteen women and five men, were executed.

Nigredo
The alchemical process is a metaphor for the spiritual journey toward living in an enlightened manner. There are three phases of transformation in Alchemy: Nigredo, Albedo, and Rubedo. Nigredo is a process of blackening, purification through Fire...the burning away of ignorance...Ego Death. Albedo is a whitening process, purification through water, enlightenment...Ressurection of the Spirit. Rubedo, the final stage, refers to reddening, the incorporation of enlightenment into one's life. The alchemists believed that as a first step in the pathway to the Philosopher's Stone all alchemical ingredients had to be cleansed and cooked extensively to a uniform black matter.
In psychology, Carl Jung interpreted nigredo as the moment of maximum despair, that is a prerequisite to personal development. Nigredo is "the dark night of the soul". He says "Right at the beginning you meet the dragon, the chthonic spirit, the devil or, as the alchemists called it, the blackness, the nigredo, and this encounter produces suffering..." It brings the ego into contact with what it fears. The state of Nigredo is often caused by a traumatic experience, and signifies the natural period of despair. This is where the alchemist has to lose everything. He must give up all attachments and become like a child again. Everything has been destroyed in the fire...Nigredo is the corruption that must take place before growth, the chaos that gives birth to cosmos.
To put it simply, Nigredo is the melancholy that makes one slow down, and examine life, to eventually seek therapy, and to witness the shadow side of one's personality. Seeing this shadow makes one encounter one's own powerlessness, guilt, and worthlessness, and work through these with suffering. One instance of the use of nigredo in Greek myth about the Goddess of Spring, Persephone and her seasonal descent into the Underworld...the Winter of her despair.

Where There’s Smoke…
"Pieces of furniture are literally burned, after which they are preserved in a clear epoxy coating. Except for three baroque
products, which are reproduced by the Dutch label Moooi, all Smoke products come from the Baas & den Herder studio
in The Netherlands. Since 2004 gallery Moss and Maarten Baas collaborate on the “Where There’s Smoke…” A Smoke collection of well known design classics of a.o Rietveld, Eames and Gaudi. Besides this series, Baas has done commissions for collectors and museums around the world."

Spread your wings and fly Allison!
Now that this season of America's Next Top Model is over, I have to admit I watched it religiously! I am NOT ashamed! My favorite model this season was Allison...hands down! Ceila, second runner up...love her! I'm really glad Allison didn't actually win though...I think she has more potential than just to be a spokeswoman for Cover Girl products! I love her unique look, she reminds me of strange beauty, Lily Cole. I hope to see her doing couture fashion editoral shoots for designers like Alexander McQueen very soon! Don't you just love this photograph of her!?

10 New Tattoos by Christopher Conn Askew!!!
I was reading my friend Chad's blog and he mentioned he wanted to get old-school roses tattooed all over his arms! I love the idea! I immediatly thought of Chris Conn because he uses alot of roses in his artwork. I love his style...he is definitely one of my favorite artists! I was thinking it's too bad Chris retired from tattooing...he worked as a tattoo artist from 1990 until his retirement from the industry in 2006. Since then he has thrown himself into his artistic and illustrative work. His medium is primarily watercolor, ink, graphite, gouache and gold leaf on paper. I went to his website to see what he's been up to lately and guess what!? Chris will be doing 10 new tattoos...no more...no less! He states:
"so, i am hereby announcing that i will do ten tattoos in NYC in August of this year. this definitely IS NOT a return to my previous tattoo career. anyone who foolishly places a bet on this being the beginnings of my return to the skin trade will lose their money. on june first, i will begin to release the 10 gift certificates on ebay. i will release one certificate per day, and each one will be on the auction block for 24 hours. after the bidding is over on one certificate, the next one will be released, until all 10 certificates are sold. each gift certificate is good for one person, on one specific date. if you win a certificate, that date is yours, and you have the entire work day (8 hours) with me. this includes consulting, drawing and tattooing. during this day, you will get my undivided attention, which means i won’t be consulting with other customers, taking phonecalls, etc. i will spend the entire day (minus an hour for lunch) focusing on the work at hand, slowly and patiently, and with a minimum of distraction." Ghost Bees
"Acclaimed artists like Marissa Nadler have shown no hesitation in their incorporation of psychedelic and shoegaze elements in folk, exposing a sub-genre that many have lovingly labeled as “dream-folk”. Ghost Bees are the latest to join the ascending ranks, portraying a hauntingly elegant form of folk music over lyrics that are poetically invigorating in meaning. Taking their lyrical influence from classic works of literature that deal with Gothic fiction, you can expect a slew of entertainingly original tales on the enchanting Tasseomancy." (link to article)

Nature Girls Rock!
I need to take a moment to do a little shout out to two fabulous girls! Emine of Cloven Hoof Jewelry and Pamela of Pamela Tuohy Jewelry! Not only are these girls are both talented couture jewelry designers inspired by Natural History...they are both sweet, thoughtful and generous! Incidentally, both of their jewelry collections can be found at Urban Flower Grange Hall.
I feel privileged to say I actually have a collection of Cloven Hoof Jewelry! Emine and I trade jewelry...and she always throws in something extra, she just can't control herself! This time she threw in this fabulous taxidermy deer eye rosette pin! Thank you Emine...I LOVE everything!!!
Check out these giant rhinocerous beetle brooches! The locket opens on one of them and has red jeweled eyes! I also have a tiny green jewel beetle necklace that I cherish! Her website is currently undergoing a tranformation but I'll let you all know as soon as she relaunches!
I wrote about Pamela Tuohy's gorgeous 'Lovers Eye' jewelry here a while ago. She was really happy to be featured here and said she enjoyed reading through the archives of my blog. When she asked me for my address I thought she was going to send me a post card or a lil' something. I couldn't believe my eyes as I opened the package she sent me...I cried! A lovely keepsake box containing one of her beautiful, one of a kind necklaces was accompanied by the sweetest most thoughtful note! And look, it's an OWL!!! Thanks again Pamela...I LOVE my necklace!!!

Kitchen Witchery Update!
Hello Loves! Hope you all you Mamas out there had a lovely Mother's Day! Here's a little update about my magical kitchen transformation! For those of you who have just recently found me, check out my Kitchen Witchery archives! Anyway, below is a pic from one little corner of my kitchen. See that wood slice with white magick weaving? It's 1 from a set of 2, called: 'As Above~So Below' by Chad of Mon Petit Fantome! (The significance of this phrase is that it is believed to hold the key to all mysteries. All systems of magic are claimed to function by this formula.) He gave them to me as a gift...what a wonderful surprise! I have both of them nestled between a set of 3 antique Black Forest hunting trophies! Love ya Chad!!!
I bought these lovely prints from Caroline Gaedechens! Click here for a closer view They're printed on vintage book pages. I was going to frame them but I found these vintage wooden clip hangers, which I think will look pretty cool!
More inspirations~ On the left: medicine woman, Susan Weed! I really want to take her Herbalism Correspondence Course!
On the right: Cole & Son Woods Wallpaper. I've lost sleep over this wallpaper! I just wanted to cover one wall, but I rent my apartment so I'm not going to invest in something I can't take with me. It's $195.00 per roll, so even one wall would kill me! But there's good news...I found these canvas birch tree curtains for only $29.99 per 2 pack! If you remember me complaining about the ugly blinds in my kitchen, this is the perfect solution! I can create that birch forest aesthetic and get rid of my ugly blinds!

Chemex Love!
Every morning starts off the same...the coffee ritual. I really can't talk to anyone until I've had at least one cup or somebody might get hurt! But after that I'm all sugar and spice! I've used the same Bodum french press for almost 10 years. We've had some great mornings together but another coffeemaker has caught my eye. My french press just isn't doin' it for me anymore...I'm leaving my Bodum for a Chemex! Oh yesss...Chemex really lights my fire!

Making Magic!!!
I made some Beltane oil for a customer! It turned out really nice...it's warm and sweet! I made extra, so if you need to heat things up in your life this oil is for you! Beltane is a cross-quarter Pagan celebration in the Wheel of the Year. It's a mid-point between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice and celebrates the awakening of the feritle energies of Nature creating passion and attraction...both which are needed to manifest your desires! Check out my Etsy Shop, click on "Custom Potion" and type Beltane Oil in the message box when checking out...unless of course you require a different custom potion!
Things are getting magical lately. Today I was on the bus with my son and there was this fella sitting behind me... he started chanting/rapping something about "conscious connections...ascension...hear the message that I'm sendin" When I was getting off the bus he smiled and said "Stay strong Ma" Someone knows what time it is! Thanks for the reminder magical messenger man...whoever you are!
I also added two handmade Elder Futhark Rune Sets! Available in Amethyst and Bloodstone!
